MARODOKA

Marodoka
Marodoka, located near Hell-Ville on Nosy Be Island, is one of the oldest villages in the region, dating back to the 17th century. Its name means ‘many people’ in Swahili, reflecting its origins as a multicultural trading center. It was inhabited by Arabs, Indians, Comorians, and later by the Sakalava people.

The village played a significant role in trade across the Indian Ocean, especially in spices and slaves.Visitors can explore the ruins of ancient Indian houses, the remains of a mosque, and a Swahili-style well. Marodoka is also known for its vibrant cultural heritage, including traditional dance, music, and ancestral ceremonies. The village is a living museum, where traditions are still practiced and shared with visitors.
Nature in Marodoka is characterized by surrounding mangroves, coconut trees, and medicinal plants. Activities include guided historical tours, cultural performances, crafts demonstrations, and storytelling sessions with village elders. Visiting Marodoka is a unique way to connect with the deep history and cultural diversity of Nosy Be.
